BEING A MENTOR

We are so glad that you have applied to be a mentor. It is our intention that you use your abilities to support and encourage mentees. This is an opportunity to journey with another person to process life in a safe place, to help them find God’s wisdom through Scripture and Holy Spirit by caring, listening, and encouraging. Mentoring is a great way to share God’s heart with others, calling out God’s treasure within and praying blessing on their lives.

“For those of us who are older or more experienced, we have a lot to offer in drawing alongside the young around us and encouraging them to make wise choices for the long term and, above all, to keep going.” Nick and Marjorie Allan

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

First you will need to attend training to be part of the mentoring team. This will cover the expectations, guidance, boundaries, and procedures as well as safeguarding and supervision for mentoring at The Well. You will also need a current DBS, which The Well will apply for.

The church is very committed to the truth and authority of the Bible and in particular the teachings of Jesus Christ as they pertain to life and faith, so we expect to use scripture as part of the mentoring process. Our desire is to see mentees made whole and to help them apply the truth of God’s word to their lives empowering them to make wise decisions.

Mentoring is not prayer or healing ministry or counselling. It is walking in friendship alongside another.

Once the mentee’s form is sent to you, you will be responsible for contacting the mentee in a timely manner to arrange the session and for deciding how you will meet and where, and whether one or more follow up sessions are needed. A mentor can expect to meet a mentee around 6 times over 6 months if required.

You are asked to write a summary after the end of the final session and send it to the mentoring co-ordinator for the records.

If anything arises such as a disclosure, contact the SLT by email.

Further training sessions will be offered, and occasional supervision where needed.

ACCOUNTABILITY AND LIABILITY

We operate a policy of strict confidentiality, but not secrecy.  Senior Leaders’ Team (SLT) may therefore be contacted and informed if help or advice is needed.

If any safeguarding matter arises during mentoring that the SLT are legally obliged to notify others about (Police, Social Services etc), the mentor will inform SLT and will also make the mentee aware that SLT have been notified and that SLT will be contacting the relevant authorities.

A brief record of mentoring will be kept by SLT, so that SLT will have an overview, ensuring ministry is shared appropriately and for records to be used in case of complaint.

It is anticipated that everyone will have a positive experience but if not, any concerns raised will be listened to carefully. The aim is to improve the effectiveness of mentoring.

If relevant, ascertain at the beginning of any mentoring relationship whether the mentee is receiving any professional counselling through their GP or any other professional services and whether they are on medication. Advise the mentee not to make any changes to their routine without them first going back to their GP or professional helper.

A mentor is not held responsible for the mentee’s decisions or course of actions taken after any mentoring.

Formal mentoring relationships should only be undertaken at The Well according to the guidance.

Training must be completed, and DBS seen before formal mentoring relationships can begin.
