All you’d like to know about our
2019 Building Redevelopment Project

In 2016, just 9 months after The Well launched publicly, we agreed the purchase of our iconic building in the heart of Ecclesall Road. We sacrificially gave £250,000 and took a £500,000 mortgage to ensure it remains a church, against bids to turn it into shops, bars and apartments.

Today we are a beacon to our neighbourhood and the nations, a place for people to meet the living God in power and in presence. In the past 3½ years our church family has grown continually. 

We’re growing together in strong community, we’re growing in purpose and in ways to love and serve our city. 

When we come together we are vibrant and busy: our Sundays gatherings are inspiring, we welcome many dozens of children, youth and students. We love how God has drawn all-ages and so many nationalities into family together. 

Our building is used most days in a big variety of ways – and sometimes we’re pushed for space.

The Well is a people and a place that is spiritually hungry for the ‘more’ of God. We are experiencing God’s goodness and we’re fired-up with a passion to be good news to our city of Sheffield.

the time is now

The time is now to invest in our building to grow our capacity. 

So far we’ve invested money to purchase and make essential upgrades to get our 115 year-old building safe, usable and feel like ‘home’. 

Now we have the opportunity to improve the interior layout and facilities in a way that will dramatically increase our capacity and comfort. We aim for a welcoming building with multi-purpose spaces not only for our church activities/groups, but to rent-out to our surrounding neighbourhood so as to help resource local community life.

During 2018 we commissioned a local architects’ firm to draw up redevelopment plans, and we consulted with you to hear of our people’s comments or concerns. Then we tightened our options to come up with a realistic project, both for cost and scope.

Our redevelopment will be in several phases:

 

Phase 1a

  • Upper Hall & Café Area redevelopment

Phase 1b

  • Install efficient modern heating system for Sanctuary & side rooms/Lower Hall

Phase 2

  • Refurbish Sanctuary area (after 2019)

We have already secured an amazing £63,000 grant from Veolia towards Phase 1a, and are applying for other grants. We have around £165,000 available from savings and previous donations towards our building fund.  [NOTE] The figures below include VAT and are the estimated costs for the project, subject to change.

We have a target to raise £170,000 towards the total costs of Phase 1, by summer 2019.
